Case studies
People face medical problems, either illnesses or injuries, while travelling. This can be a traumatic experience. OneWorld Assist helps care for you and your family during these critical times. Here are a few examples of how we do this.
Comfort during a family crisis
After an afternoon of walking with his daughter and grandson in Sacramento, California, an 81-year-old Vancouver grandfather suddenly slumped over suffering a major stroke. Paramedics rushed him to a medical centre in nearby Roseville, California. A OneWorld Assist case manager and physician coordinated medical care with emergency doctors in the US. The man’s condition left him unable to walk or use his left side. Because he required long-term rehabilitation, OneWorld Assist quickly accessed a bed at a hospital in British Columbia, where he lives, so he could return home for care and treatment.
Our experienced assistance team then coordinated air ambulance transportation allowing the man’s elderly wife and grandson to accompany him on the aircraft with full medical support. We took care of the details so his family could concentrate on dealing with a family crisis and planning his rehabilitation.
Assistance around the world
A Vancouver woman, 64, on a golf vacation with her husband in the Dominican Republic suffered a heart attack. She was sent to the local hospital’s intensive care unit where OneWorld Assist provided medical translation for her and her husband, which gave her the confidence to follow local doctors’ orders to use medications to stabilize her condition while diagnostic tests were completed. It was confirmed she had a blockage in her heart and required angioplasty.
OneWorld Assist coordinated for her transportation back to a hospital in Toronto, Canada. We also arranged accommodations for her husband at a hotel near the hospital where she was treated. Four days later she returned to her home in Vancouver well rested and ready to begin recovery. Her experience with OneWorld Assist brought her a level of care and support that surpassed her expectations.
